Gabriela Renee is an artist and curator based in Melbourne (Wurundjeri Country) originally from Canberra (Ngunnawal and Ngambri Country). Her multidisciplinary practice delves into intricate cultural and personal narratives, reflecting her Sinhalese, Malayali, English, Shetlander, German, and Irish heritage as well as her Australian/Malaysian culture. Renee's practice takes the form of immersive installations that recontextualise imagery and objects from her family's archive, exploring her own sense of disconnection from her hybrid cultural identity. Renee questions the cultural significance of the document, family objects, and archival images – and there power to reconnect and restore fragmented identity and belonging for people of a diaspora.
